A while back this very kind lady asked me to zombify her ... and her dog. I did, and she loved it, although she did expect a bit more gore. So in a typical state of panic and confusion I hacked her and her dog apart for the second time. This is the result, which as usual, looks better in real life.

I went and cleaned up my studio and my art box ... and found a whole slew of zombies lying around. This is one of the reasons I prefer to work traditionally ... you can physically hold the item and you don't need to worry about hard drives crashing or forgetting to save your work.
And not to toot my own horn or anything, but how cool will it look having 50+ zombies eventually hanging on my walls :)

10 days flew by

It seems the busier you get the faster time flies. So many things going on over and above family life that its starting to bruise my brain. That, or the infection is spreading internally and I am missing the signs. The hunger, the bluish green tinge to my skin, the RAGE!

cough cough ... yeah ... this place is getting a little dusty due to lack of use/updates. I'll try harder to not let it go this long between updates. Been busy with commissions, finishing off all the portraits for theHORDE tshirt and doing live 'hangout' sessions on googlePLUS. I even had a hangoutparty.com event which lasted for about 3 hours, and I drew 8 zombie portraits live during that time. It is supposed to be recorded, and once I find the link I'll post it.

Anyways ... here's a bunch of commissions I recently did. Contact me if you want one done.

Capping off the last week before school starts with a zombie kitteh that I started over a month ago and only got completed because my wife threatened me with housework if I didn't. She's a huge fan of the zombie kittehz but really wants to see some zombie puppehz soon.

Next week school begins and my time to draw grows by hours and hours per day ... so looking forward to it.

Monday Murder!

It was an interesting weekend that ended with a super busy weekday. Holy shit! In laws came down with little Clarence and my kids were off the wall with excitement. Everyone was happy by the end of the night, free pizza might have had something to do with it too ;)

Work wise, the ZOMBIE TSHIRT campaign is 20 days closer to being finished, and less than a hundred bucks from being fully funded. I haven't reached 40 zombies yet, but its getting closer.

My first official CAT commission is nearly finished, more zombie kittehz are coming soon, a few zombie portraits are in the works and nearly finished, and the ultra generous Patrick from www.zombiefiles.net should be extra pleased when he sees his finished artworks this week.

Some times I feel like a Chump, some times I don't. I type this up as my kids play in the rather large wadding pool my inlaws bought for them a few years back. 2 out of 3 are playing in there nicely, the 3rd is up on the deck crying because he got splashed. Go figure.

So anyways, busy working on zombie kittehz, a zombie hunter, 2 big ass zombie promotional pieces and a non zombie kitty commission. Busy days indeed.

Also created a 5x7 painting crayon colored canvas image, which is listed on etsy now.

And my neighbors crappy rotten white washed an eon ago fence fell down. I'll bet they blame my dog, the bastiches.

tuesday trawling

Had a bit of fun trawling the google+ streams again today, and drew cats. Not zombie cats this time, just regular plain old would rather scratch your eyes out than look at you cats. And my wife decided today was the day to clean the whole damn kitchen. The windows, the walls, the friggin' ceiling. I apparently volunteered to help, some sort of marriage vow clause i was obviously to drunk to notice at the time. Glad its over, she's happy with the end result so we wont have to do it again for a year. Tomorrow its the living room ... I'm calling in sick.

It has been a rough week in the fact that swimming lessons for my children, while being totally worth it and potentially life saving, wreaked havoc on my schedule. Tomorrow I get to sleep in and have morning coffee.

On the plus side I've been having a blast getting to know people and spread the infection on googlePLUS. Doing lots of quick little 5 minute zombie portraits for people that aren't expecting it has been great fun. And a few more zombie cats have managed to claw their way into my life. Here's a peek.

It's been a rough day. Thankfully the swimming lessons end tomorrow so my mornings can get back to normal. Main thing is I will get coffee in the morning. I miss my morning coffees.

It hasn't been a very focused day. Most of the morning was spent with swimming lessons for the kids, and aw shit shopping. As in, aw shit we forgot to buy jam ... and eggs. I hate shopping at the grocery store ... would much rather go to a toy store, art store or halloween prop store. The afternoon wasn't much better, lots of time spent separating the kids so no blood would spill. Trawled the GooglePLUS stream for a few zombies, the images below are what I found.

This is the second zombie kitty trading card I have made, its for sale on Etsy right now. The first one went really fast. Seems like people who like zombies also like cats ... and zombie cats are a hit! Well, at least it seems like they are so far. Even if they weren't I real enjoy drawing them. It's lots of fun, my kids really like it and its neat practice. So many different breeds, I'm going to try a hairless one next. Going to make it extra creepy. :)

This is my first ever zombie kitty commission and the customer is very happy with the results, but I have mixed feelings. Typical of us artsy types ... or so I'm told. Seems that people want me to draw their pets suddenly, both zombified and 'regular' ... not complaining, just saying. If you want one too you know what to do.

It's been a gloomy, dreary, rain soaked Saturday. The perfect type of day to sit around drawing zombies, listening to the sounds of children tormenting each other while fresh ~~brains~~ bread bakes in the oven.

So on Google+ it was suggested I do a zombie kitty, and this is my second attempt at it. My first one, several years ago, wasn't quite so cute. This one is a tad more adorable, kinda, maybe, and has an uncontrollable urge to eat bird brains.

It'll eat any type of brain, I just wanted to say birdbrains.

So what is it? Zombie Kitty or Kitty Zombie, and is there a difference?

I mentioned yesterday I finally bought water color pencils. I just started using them today and they are surprisingly AWESOME. Blending is so much better now, and I am really getting excited about doing some amazing pieces. Ideas are flowing like blood from the severed carotid artery.

Today has been a day filled with loading up all the old and unused crap we have lying around the house and carted it off to my moms house to sell at her yard sale tomorrow. One persons junk is another persons treasure, or so they say. I really don't care, I'm just happy to be rid of it. And if it all sells for a buck ... it's a buck i didn't have yesterday.

Because of all that I didn't get a chance to draw much today, so I'm throwing up something I did a while back. It's originally color but looks pretty cool in black and white. I was giving it to Martin Brandt for the upcoming release of his zombie anthology (which I have a 10 page story in) called DEAD FUTURE. I went out and hung a few of my better (or worse) zombie drawings and paintings for an artshow that is happening tomorrow. There are artists from all over the place hanging and displaying their work but there is only one zombie artist there.

Had a great conversation with the owner of Posers Gallery here in town ... I always feel better after talking with like minded individuals. Speaking of which ... the maniacal Martin Brandt offered up his encouragement during a IM chat and I played a loop of him on Vyou ( or whatever its called ) and it was funny as hell. Kept looking up at me from his book ... and inspired me to doodle him out a bit. A bit of a warm up doodle at any rate.

Let's give a round of applause for unnecessary alliteration folks!

I tell ya, the day started off to early and hasn't really gone very well from the word go. Life with kids is a challenge at the best of times, but today I could just about pack my bags, hop a train and live my life as a hobo. If I was a total asshat ... which I'm not. Sure I'm an asshat, but not a total one. I could rant for a while but then I'd just be wasting more time, and I need to waste as little as I can.

Still cranking on the new BuyZombie website design, a little tougher than I originally hoped but it's coming along, you folks with big screens will really dig it. Also been pushing hard on getting some existing graphics of mine on to tshirts and anxious to start getting them on other products and pimping the hell out of it. On top of that I have some comics to draw and a fundraising campaign to organize and promote, an art show coming up on July 4th at which I will be doing zombie art demos and portraits.

Last night I spoke with a WPG dude on facebook about doing some art for his zombie anthology magazine and going to the Central Canada Comic Con in October. He got me extremely jazzed for that and it looks like I will be attending ... so I need to get my shiAt DONE. So today its all BZ and nothing else.

But I am trying to keep this daily, so here are a couple of sketchbook heads with a touch of photoshop color on one of them.

You may remember this image from earlier on ... it's been tweaked in photoshop and displayed in 2 different ways, and is now available as a shirt in my spreadshop store.

I'm going back over some of my more popular images as well as some that never saw the light of day and getting them made in to some sort of product. Many people have been asking for coffee and travel mugs so those things are on the horizon. All this just takes time and my biggest project right now is finishing off the new website design for BuyZombie.com. Once that's done it will be more tshirts as well as web comic pages and nothing else.

Oh, and July will be a month of some give aways for people that own one of my shirt designs. Thats all I'm saying for now ... back to

DEAD

I was hoping to post a witty title but nothing is coming to mind. Sometimes wit just isn`t needed, more matter hard much you want it.

So it`s the end of the work week and my productivity will soon come to an end, sorta. The weekend looms and the kids are anxious to go to water parks and other outdoor stuff. All in all it has been pretty good. Better than previous weeks.

The image below was a rough sketch, one of dozens, made for a publisher that wanted to promote the word DEAD for their books. My shit is to cartoony for them, not enough realism for their liking. They want the painted, sorta real, type imagery that you find most other places. So it was rejected, just like nearly every other idea and concept I gave them. To messy, to simple, not what I had envisioned at all, etc etc yadda yadda ya ...

Really freaked me out inside my own head. Totally fubared me for a while and even now it creeps in and threatens to make a mess again. So now I don`t work with them anymore. Haven`t in months and it`s for the best. I don`t think I will ever work for a publisher like that again. To restricting and smothering.

So anyways ... here`s an image that was condemed to hell but brought back to life like a cast member of Supernatural. Revamped and super charged from the original doodle.

As I mentioned in my last post, I am trying to turn this in to my J O B ... so I have started taking designs I like and putting them on shirts. Eventually I want to own my own silkscreen machine but until then, its the experts at spreadshirt that are doing it for me. Check my store here, it`s a tad bare at the moment, but I just started.

ok, here's what happened

Life did its thing again ... ups and downs man, ups and down.

But anyways ... besides being a crazy 2 weeks or so art has been done and my studio is once again mine. Mostly. Now we're working together to insure I start treating this whole art career thing as an actual career instead of just a whimsical waste of time and talents. So far productivity has been increasing, word or mouth is beginning to spread again and I feel pretty damn good about the whole future of me and mine.

Below is one of the first images I drew once I got the studio set up ... its rather large and I'll probably keep working on it until its hangable. (is that a word?)

Project wise, I have a few that are still on going. One of which is currently in the works with BuyZombie. It's a little hush hush right now. One project I just finished was for theDeadBallClub. The awesome people at RoughRide Creations contacted me and asked me to draw up a zombie baseball. Sadly, because of how my life was structured this simple little job took much longer than it should have ... but it did get done. Below you will see some samples of the work in progress, and the final results. They are pleased with how it turned out so it's all good.

So today marks the first day of my wife entering the working world again, leaving me alone with the my kids ... and all the chores. I thought that maybe I could get some work done this morning, give the boys lunch and get some more art done in the afternoon.

I was wrong.

There are so many stupid little chores and tasks to do during that day that it's a full time goddamn job and I was a fool to think this would be a cake walk. Interruptions and distractions were everywhere. I'm hoping that the evening, after the kids are in bed, will be my time to get productive.

Otherwise we're all in a lot of trouble. Me more than you.

What a day today turned out to be. The only real thing of note is that my wife has officially joined the realm of the working class ... and she starts on Monday. Big cheers for her, it gets her out of the house and amongst the living adults for the first time in 8 years. She is stoked and so am I ... because now that she will be making the ca$h I don't have to bust my hump as hard, and I can refocus on honing my craft and polishing my skills.

Win - win.

my brain THREW up

A while back I was commissioned to zombify the band Threw. So like most jobs I started off with a big B A N G - lots of doodles, lots of excitement, lots of great ideas.

Then like most jobs a distraction turned up, family issues arose, something in my head told me I couldn't do it, blah blah blah.

Then ... like most jobs ... I got the fire back and started ripping into the idea with a vengeance. Ink and paint flew everywhere ... it got messy.

A n d ... like most jobs ... I finished it.

It looks much better in real life ( so many details are lost ) ... and it measures about 11" x 15" ... one of the largest images I've ever done as a commission. I see so many parts I would like to redo or modify and adjust but I can't. It now belongs to the band.

And my wife said I worked on it long enough. She did the math ... apparently I only got paid about 2 bucks an hour to do this picture.

During some rare quiet time over the last few months I fooled around a little with an idea I had and have fine tuned and tweaked again and again. I think it's pretty much ready and done ... I don't really want to keep playing with it anymore. So now I am posting it and also trying to sell it on shirts or coffee mugs over at http://www.zazzle.com/idrawzombies ... but my store is a mess so I guess I will have to start fixing it up and making it look nicer.

Been feeling a bit over whelmed lately so I pretty much took off the long weekend to chill with the family, play some Wii and drink a little rye once the kids were in bed.

I like Rye, and it likes me.
Back to the regular schedule now, and seeing the end of a few projects coming up fast, but as always, there are other projects lurking in the shadows. Waiting until I let my guard down so they can jump me and beat the shiAt outta me.

It was a hell of a week that began with could read like a tragical comedy, complete with doctor visits, temper tantrums and a total disconnect. But, as I am always telling my wife ( and she is slowly starting to believe me ) , things worked out in the end. If it wasn't for the up and downs that life deals to us on a day to day basis things would surely be dull.

It would be nice if there were more ups than downs though.

Anyways ... artwork continues. Currently working on a portrait for the band Threw and another commission that I can't name just yet. Also looking in to setting up a table and an upcoming artshow in July to spread a little Zed infection, and nearly ready to pimp the shiAt out of myself on zazzle and other POD sites.

And the weather has been nice lately, so I've been working outside with the birds and bugs ... and my boys.

Not a full frontal lobotomy or electro shock therapy can cure the desease. If you try, eventually you will also die. We've all seen it happen in the movies so you know it's gotta be true.
Been spending a lot of time going through the blog of Sam Kieth lately and really getting inspired to try taking my mess to another level. It's hard to let go of old habits though and only time will tell if I actually achieve any improvement. I predict many days of frustration ahead. If anyone has any tips of links to sites that might be of interest, I would appreciate a link. Thanks.

That title pretty much sums up my existence these days. Searching for time and space ... mostly time. I am getting things done as slow as ever but now I'm doing it at every chance I get, and the results get posted here. I'm trying to work on my color blending and just laying out the shapes in red pen then going over it in black. I like the results but some people think the red pen detracts from the image. I could take that out with photoshop but I like it there. What's your thoughts?

Probably when you start to unearth the bodies you had buried a few years back by being a little over zealous in your attempts at removing the weeds that have overtaken the flowerbed. Should have dug the graves a little deeper.
Anyways - pretty much finished up the last of the yard work and had a chance to doodle a little while the kids played outside. Going to take the weekend easy and start back on the webcomics on Monday.

So I don't really have a zombie today ... haven't been inside long enough to actually even draw anything. Shopping, spring cleaning and an evening wiener roast with the kids describes my day. But in an effort to keep posting daily, here is a 'trailer' of sorts ... of the comic my kids have started to develop.
Drawn at break neck speeds a week ago as they all shouted different ideas and giggled the whole time. It's 3/5/8 year old humor at its finest.

So I was looking around for something to do while waiting for the kids to fall asleep and I saw all these paper towel rolls we were going to send to my sons kindergarten class and thought to have some fun with one.

Of course one of my kids saw what I was doing and now my wife is convinced I will be making at least 2 more of these tomorrow so that each kid has one.

Could be a good thing ... or it might all go horribly wrong.

I have been presented with the task of doing some known characters as zombies and haven't really gotten in to it much ... until tonight when I tackled Thanos. This started just as a doodle for the hell of it since I've never drawn him before but he was a lot of fun to work with and I kept drawing him and this is the final result for tonight. Usually it's one of my kids needing something, or stirring up some shit with a sibling ... or on occasion doing something dangerously stupid. So I have to get up and intervene. It's the life of a parent. Then when I get back to the drawing I forget where I was, or what I was doing, and it takes a while to get back into "theGROOVE".

Then ... just as I started getting into the swing of things again ... something interrupts me.

It's a vicious cycle.

This was a commission for a "nice" guy who runs a security team of sorts. At least that's what I've gleamed from the info I read about him. Had to stalk him a bit to make sure he was legit, and not out to get me. Still not sure if its a security team of a zombie defense team or if he's running some sort of covert black ops team ... it doesn't really matter though. In the end he's just going to be another slab of meat for the zombies.

I'm mailing it out with a couple other goodies next week.

is an undead cat. Well, considering how cats are such jerks and quietly plotting our deaths, an undead cat would most likely be a terrible thing. A horde of undead cats would be a real friggin' nightmare. This image was inspired by my own cat Charlie ... who whines like a damn banshee until he is fed. Then when he's done eating everything in his bowl he whines for more. He's old (15yrs) so we put up with it, occasionally squirting him with a water gun to shut him up for a while.
This next image is a preview of the return of my webcomic Rise of the Zombie. The ember of desire to finish this has suddenly exploded in to an inferno and I've been plotting it out like made and doing lots of sketches as well. Once I have my few client projects and commisions out of the way I am going to focus solely on the comic monsterBAD and Rise of the Zombie.

FRANKenStine ... created by my kids crowded around me on the floor shouting out directions all at once. I tried my best to keep up with their demands but it was hard ... mistakes were made, quality was sacraficed in an attempt to appease the brashness of youth.
1 eye, 2 noses, 5 ears, 8 toes on each foot, 8 fingers on each hand except 1 which only has a finger and a thumb because the other fingers got bitten off by a zombie. He's nakes, no, he's wearing underwear, long skinny neck, bone arms, and it went on and on ... what we have left is what you see ... and the comical tales of FRANKenStine may be coming to a monitor near you. Directed by kids and drawn by a dementedly delighted dad.

Family life keeping me busy, plus lots of work getting ready for August and OCTOBER. On top of that the weather is getting nicer so there's lots of outside time ( moving bodies previously covered with snow, digging shallow graves, etc )

I haven't been able to keep this daily because of everything going on, but a question I have for the 3 or 4 regular readers is ... do you want it daily even if its just doodles and scrapbook type stuff or just post finished and more complete works?

It's just over half a year before Posers Gallery has its 2nd DARK ART exhibit and I plan on having a huge amount of work on display there. I'm brainstorming ideas and one of them is to do a bunch of iconic character zombie portraits ... like a teddy bear, amongst others. Could be neat having a wall of art devoted to zombified childrens toys

For the past few weeks there has been a build up of trash in my mind. Too many projects, too many distractions, too many doubts ... all in all just too much stuff. I've purged much of that already and there is still a little bit left to go but lately things have been getting brighter ... if that's possible for someone that is constantly drawing dead things.

None the less, I have been finding my creative drive once again and these large spontaneous pieces have been a great help. And there are more on the way.

Well I'll tell ya why ... because it's my GD blog that's why. And I think the space slugs webcomic is funny, my friend Nicholas P Myers drew this and was nice enough to send me a high res version to color. I didn't do it justice but it was fun, and only printed out to 4x6. I'm going to try an 8x10 sometime in the near future.

Anyways ... lots more zombie images coming, as early as tomorrow.

Don't have much to say, been busy with life issues, still have kids a little bit sick, redirecting and fine tuning my focus to be productive and happy. Really starting to get a feel for this new style that is all me. Going to see where it takes me.

Sometimes things spiral out of control ... sometimes things are out of my control ... sometimes things that are spiraling out of control are out of my control.
Enter sick kids.
If any of you out there have kids then you know just how draining and exhausting sick kids can be. They don't mean to make your life more difficult than it already is, they're just sick and wish they weren't. They don't understand its natural and will go away. They don't know that all the sneezing and coughing is going to pass. No. They're scared and they need a hug and someone to tuck them back into bed at 1am in the morning.
And then again at 2:15 ... and 4 ... and 5:40 ... and 15 minutes before the alarm was going to go off anyways.
That has been my last 5 days.
I hate flu season and I don't think this winter is ever going to end.

This picture was created recently because I haven't been able to do much drawing lately. To uninspired and far to drained. Tomorrow is another day and I have lots of plans. Let's see if life can let me accomplish them or will another curve ball be thrown my way.

Well, this was supposed to be online on Monday but for some reason my awesome super duper laptop computer crapped out on me and I spent a whole day trying to figure out why, then yesterday playing catchup for Monday and now today I'm caught up and here is my image for your eyes.
... whew ...
This was drawn and painted on a circular piece of cardboard that I had lying around the house. Used a bic pen to sketch it out then started painting it up with watercolours ... when I was mostly happy with it I took a nice ink pen to fill in the blacks.
This is how I am meant to create my images ... from start to finish with nothing in between.
